June 3 is officially World Bicycle Day, which feels appropriate for a date that's seen humanity reach new heights—literally and figuratively. From mountain peaks to football pitches to scandalous royal marriages, this day has delivered some seriously memorable moments throughout history. Liverpool FC Kicks Off a LegacyIn 1892, Liverpool Football Club was founded, and English football would never be the same. What started as a business dispute over rent at Anfield turned into one of the most successful clubs in football history. The landlord essentially said "fine, I'll start my own team," and somehow it actually worked. That's the kind of petty energy that builds empires. Today, Liverpool boasts multiple league titles, European cups, and a fanbase that takes "You'll Never Walk Alone" very, very seriously. A Royal Wedding That Rocked the MonarchySpeaking of dramatic decisions, in 1937, Edward, Duke of Windsor—who had abdicated the British throne just six months earlier—married American socialite Wallis Simpson in a private ceremony in France. This was the culmination of perhaps the most famous "it's complicated" relationship status in royal history. Edward literally gave up being king to marry a twice-divorced American woman, which was apparently more scandalous than anything happening on reality TV today. The ceremony was private, the British royal family stayed home, and the couple spent the rest of their lives as the world's most famous royal dropouts. Conquering the ImpossibleIn 1950, French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal became the first people ever to reach the summit of a peak higher than 8,000 meters above sea level when they topped Annapurna. Before this, nobody knew if humans could even survive at such extreme altitudes while climbing. They proved it was possible, though the expedition came at a serious cost with severe frostbite. Still, they opened the door for all future high-altitude mountaineering, proving that sometimes the best way to celebrate World Bicycle Day is by going somewhere bikes definitely cannot. Born Today: Football and Music RoyaltyJune 3 has given us some serious talent. German footballer Mario Götze was born in 1992, the man who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final. And in 2000, Beabadoobee was born—the Filipino singer-songwriter who's become an indie-rock darling with her dreamy, nostalgic sound that makes millennials feel simultaneously young and ancient. |
