On This Day June 2: Queens, Memes, and Presidential Weddings

June 2 is one of those dates that's delivered some truly spectacular moments throughout history. We're talking crowns, controversies, and the kind of pop culture moment that still haunts the internet decades later. Let's dive into the highlights.

A Queen Gets Her Crown

In 1953, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London, kicking off a reign that would last over seven decades. The ceremony was watched by millions and set the standard for royal pageantry. Little did anyone know she'd still be going strong well into the 21st century, outlasting trends, prime ministers, and probably several of her own corgis. The coronation was such a big deal that people bought televisions just to watch it, making it the original must-see TV event.

The Only White House Wedding (For a President, Anyway)

Back in 1886, President Grover Cleveland did something no president has done before or since: he got married inside the White House. Cleveland, who was 49 at the time, wed 21-year-old Frances Folsom in what was probably the most scrutinized venue choice in wedding history. Forget destination weddings when you can literally get married at work. Frances became the youngest First Lady in American history, and honestly, the whole thing was the 19th century equivalent of a royal wedding for Americans.

Loss: A Meme is Born

In 2008, webcomic artist Tim Buckley published a comic called "Loss" as part of his series Ctrl+Alt+Del. What was intended as a serious storyline about miscarriage in an otherwise gaming-focused comedy comic became one of the internet's most enduring and peculiar memes. The four-panel layout became so recognizable that people started reducing it to abstract lines, and to this day, you can't escape someone sneaking a Loss reference into the most unexpected places. It's the meme that keeps on giving, whether Buckley wanted it to or not.

Birthday Roll Call

June 2 has blessed us with some serious talent. In 1988, Awkwafina was born, the actress and rapper who would go on to steal scenes in everything from Crazy Rich Asians to Shang-Chi. That same year also gave us Argentine football legend Sergio Agüero. And in 1989, Australian cricket captain Steve Smith entered the world, ready to eventually confuse Americans about which sport has the cooler Smith.
