Why Cats Knock Things Off Tables: An Investigation

Why Cats Knock Things Off Tables: An Investigation

You have seen it a hundred times. The slow approach. The deliberate paw. The unbroken eye contact as a glass slides toward the edge of the table and, finally, over it. If you have ever wondered why cats knock things off tables, you are not alone.

It usually starts with attention

Cats are master manipulators of human behaviour. Knocking an object off a surface produces an immediate, reliable reaction: you look, you gasp, you get up. To a bored cat, that is a jackpot. Even being told off counts as attention, which is why scolding rarely works.

The hunt instinct, indoors

Pawing, batting and pouncing are hardwired hunting behaviours. A small object on a smooth surface behaves a little like prey. Your cat is not being evil; it is running a tiny simulation of catching dinner, using your lip balm as the unfortunate stand-in.

Texture, gravity and pure curiosity

Cats explore the world with their paws. A nudge tells them whether something is heavy, loose or interesting, and the resulting tumble provides instant feedback.

Can you actually stop it?

  • Give them better outlets: puzzle feeders, wand toys and a daily play session.
  • Remove the reward: when it is safe, try not to react dramatically.
  • Make surfaces boring: museum putty for valuables.

Will any of this fully cure the behaviour? Probably not. Some cats simply enjoy the chaos, and honestly, so do the rest of us watching the clips.
