There's something beautifully American about our politicians' complete inability to grasp the concept of humility. Whether they're comparing themselves to religious figures or playing hide-and-seek with financial documents, our elected officials have perfected the art of making everything about them while simultaneously insisting they're just humble public servants. It's performance art, really, except we're all trapped in the gallery. When Self-Regard Reaches Biblical ProportionsNothing says "man of the people" quite like Trump depicted as Jesus himself to adoring crowds. Because when you're trying to connect with everyday Americans struggling to pay their bills, the obvious move is to lean into messiah imagery. To be fair, politicians across the spectrum have mastered the art of the grandiose gesture. Progressive candidates promise to single-handedly save democracy before breakfast, moderates position themselves as the only adults in the room, and conservatives warn that they alone can preserve civilization as we know it. It's exhausting being surrounded by so many indispensable people. The Transparency Two-StepOf course, humility isn't just about how you present yourself—it's also about what you're willing to share. Remember Romney's famous tax return saga becoming a whole thing? Politicians love lecturing us about transparency right up until someone asks them to be, you know, transparent. Democrats rail against dark money while quietly courting billionaire donors in Martha's Vineyard. Republicans champion personal responsibility while blaming everyone from the media to their own staff for their scandals. Both sides have perfected the art of demanding standards they have no intention of meeting themselves. The real joke is that we keep acting surprised. Every election cycle, we pretend this will be the year politicians discover modesty and candor. Spoiler alert: it won't be. They'll keep comparing themselves to historical heroes, dodging legitimate questions, and wondering why nobody trusts them anymore. But hey, at least they're bipartisan about it. If there's one thing that unites our political class, it's their shared commitment to making everything harder than it needs to be while insisting they're here to help. |
