Parenting Is Just Improv With Much Higher Stakes

Parenting Is Just Improv With Much Higher Stakes

Nobody is ready to be a parent, which is convenient, because parenthood doesn't wait for you to be ready. It throws you on stage with no script, no rehearsal, and a tiny co-star who improvises constantly and occasionally vomits. The only winning move is to commit to the bit and pretend you know what you're doing.

It is the hardest improv show on Earth, and the audience never leaves.

The Overcorrection

Some parents handle the chaos by trying to control every variable. The eternal comedy of parents wrapping their kids in metaphorical bubble wrap comes from a place of pure love expressed as pure anxiety. They mean well. The kid will be telling stories about it for decades.

The Cool Parent Fantasy

Then there's the other approach — leaning all the way into the chaos. The dream of parenting with rock-star energy is mostly aspirational, because actual rock stars get to sleep and parents do not. But the spirit is right: sometimes you just turn the music up and accept that the house will never be clean again.

Why Anyone Signs Up

It makes no logical sense. The hours are terrible, the pay is negative, the feedback is a tiny human screaming at 3 a.m. for reasons unknown. And yet people do it, again and again, because somewhere in the exhaustion is a kind of joy that doesn't translate to anyone who hasn't felt it.

So to every parent improvising their way through the world's longest unscripted show: you're doing better than you think. The kid is fine. Probably. Keep the music up.
