September 8: Star Trek, Stupas & a Golden Mermaid

September 8: Star Trek, Stupas & a Golden Mermaid

September 8 is the kind of date that boldly went where no calendar had gone before — literally, in one case. Grab a snack, settle in, and let's teleport through the highlights.

Space: The Final Premiere

In 1966, Star Trek made its American premiere with an episode called "The Man Trap," quietly launching a franchise that would go on to spawn movies, spin-offs, conventions, and an entire generation of people who insist "Live long and prosper" is a legitimate greeting. Not bad for a show that debuted the same day Queen Elizabeth II opened the Severn Bridge and declared a "new economic era for South Wales." Two visions of the future, one very productive Thursday. Somewhere, the Severn Bridge and the USS Enterprise are still arguing about who aged better.

The Original Beauty Queen (Kind Of)

Rewind to 1921, when Atlantic City crowned young Margaret Gorman the "Golden Mermaid" — the delightfully aquatic forerunner to what we now call the Miss America pageant. Before the sashes and the tearful acceptance speeches, we apparently just handed out a mermaid title and called it a day. Honestly, "Golden Mermaid" slaps harder than most modern awards. Nobody dreams of being crowned a runner-up. Everybody dreams of being a Golden Mermaid.

Happy Birthday, Gaten Matarazzo

If today's date feels a little upside down, that's fitting: September 8, 2002 gave us Gaten Matarazzo, the American actor and singer beloved as Dustin from a certain nostalgic sci-fi juggernaut set in the 1980s. Kids who grew up watching him defeat interdimensional nasties are now old enough to feel personally attacked by his birthday. He shares the date with Indian cricketer Shubman Gill (1999) and English rugby player Ellie Kildunne (1999), proving September 8 has a real soft spot for talented young overachievers who make the rest of us look bad.

Founders, Composers, and a Very Old Town

For the history buffs: in 1565, Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded St. Augustine, Florida — the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the contiguous United States. It's been holding down that title for centuries and refuses to retire. Meanwhile, in 1726, J. S. Bach led the first performance of a solo cantata for alto voice, because even the greatest composer of all time needed a Sunday gig. Between rockets, mermaids, and Baroque bangers, September 8 truly contains multitudes. Prosper accordingly.
