Some days coast through history with nothing to show for themselves. October 24 is not that day. It's got bridges, pop stars, horror novels, and one very productive telescope. Buckle up. Engineering Flex: Bridges and the Ultimate Group ProjectIn 1931, the George Washington Bridge was dedicated, connecting Manhattan to Fort Lee, New Jersey, and eventually becoming the world's busiest motor-vehicle bridge. Translation: millions of people cross it daily, and roughly all of them are convinced the person ahead of them doesn't know how a merge works. Earlier, in 1949, the cornerstone of the United Nations headquarters was laid in New York City. Fitting, since October 24 is also United Nations Day, marking the moment in 1945 when the UN Charter entered into force. It's basically the organization's birthday, and remarkably it still hasn't figured out whose turn it is to bring snacks. The Shipwreck That Accidentally Invented a VampireHere's a delicious bit of trivia: in 1885, the Russian ship Dmitry ran aground in Whitby, an incident that inspired the arrival of Count Dracula to England in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel. So the next time someone romanticizes a shipwreck, remember it once gave the world history's most famous cape-wearing, neck-obsessed night owl. And in 1851, William Lassell discovered Umbriel and Ariel, the third- and fourth-largest moons of Uranus. Yes, we're going to let that planet's name sit there quietly and behave ourselves. Mostly. Birthday Shout-Outs: The Class of October 24This date delivers a stacked lineup of celebrity birthdays. British singer-songwriter Raye was born in 1997, and these days she's the kind of artist who turns a slow-burn career into a victory lap. Also arriving in 1997 was wrestler Bron Breakker, who presumably entered the world already flexing. The sports world cashes in too: Jaylen Brown, the American basketball player, was born in 1996, along with Dominican baseball slugger Rafael Devers. And over in Tokyo, Japanese singer-songwriter Ado showed up in 2002 to eventually become a vocal powerhouse the whole internet agreed to love. Finally, Permission to SnackBest of all, October 24 is Food Day in the United States, an observance that doesn't require decorations, gifts, or pants with buttons. It's a day dedicated to eating well, which is a lofty goal that most of us interpret as "eating, well, a lot." Pair it with that UN Day spirit of global cooperation and you've got the perfect excuse for an international buffet. Grab a fork. History approves. |
