Some days make the history books with a polite little shrug. October 18 kicked down the door, launched a cat into space, and set a world record that stood for 23 years. Let's get into it. The Space Race Got AdorableIn 1963, the first cat in space, later known as Félicette, launched aboard a French Véronique rocket. Yes, while the superpowers were busy flexing with dogs and astronauts, France went full charcuterie-and-attitude and sent a cat. Honestly, the only surprising part is that she came back and didn't immediately demand a window seat and a nap. Not to be outdone, in 1967 the Soviet space probe Venera 4 became the first spacecraft to perform direct in situ analysis of the environment of another planet, Venus. And in 2019, NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch pulled off the first all-female spacewalk, calmly stepping outside the International Space Station to swap out a power controller like it was a dead smoke-detector battery. One Giant Leap (The Literal Kind)In 1968, at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City, American athlete Bob Beamon achieved a distance of 8.90 m (29.2 ft) in the long jump, setting a world record that stood for 23 years. To put that in perspective: he jumped so far the measuring equipment reportedly wasn't ready for it. That's not an athlete, that's a glitch in the simulation. Happy Birthday to the Fun OnesOctober 18 babies know how to make an entrance. Irish actor Barry Keoghan (1992) turns up today, as does surfer John John Florence (1992), who shares a birthday with Teen Wolf's Tyler Posey (1991). Toss in Zohran Mamdani (1991), American politician and mayor of New York City, and basketball standout Brittney Griner (1990), and you've got a party guest list that ranges from unsettling screen presence to catching waves to actually running the biggest city in America. Celebrate ResponsiblyUp north, it's Persons Day in Canada, which commemorates women being legally recognized as "persons" — a bar so low it's remarkable it required a holiday, but we'll absolutely take the win. And for a delightful curveball, Croatia celebrates Necktie Day, honoring the humble cravat, which the Croatians basically invented. So the next time someone strangles themselves with a Windsor knot before a meeting, remember: that's heritage. From cats in rockets to ties around necks, October 18 is proof that history never does anything halfway. Go jump 29 feet — metaphorically. |
