Every date has its highlight reel, and July 8 is showing off. We've got a Renaissance bear worth a fortune, one of history's most stubborn cover stories, and enough athletic birthdays to field a very expensive lineup. Buckle up. A Bear Named Leonardo (Well, Drawn by Him)In 2021, Leonardo da Vinci's Head of a Bear sold at auction in London for a jaw-dropping £8.8 million, a record for a drawing by the master himself. That's millions of pounds for a sketch of a bear's face. Somewhere, every art student who ever doodled in the margins of their notebook is quietly reconsidering their life choices. Turns out the secret wasn't talent — it was talent, plus five centuries, plus being Leonardo. The Great Weather Balloon of 1947On July 8, 1947, the U.S. military announced that the mysterious "flying disc" recovered near Roswell, New Mexico, was actually a conventional weather balloon. Just a balloon. Nothing to see here. Move along. This is quite possibly the most famous "trust us, it's totally normal" in human history, and it launched a thousand documentaries, a small tourism industry, and countless people pointing at the sky and going "but what if?" To this day, "weather balloon" remains the greatest two-word deflection ever deployed. Happy Birthday to the Footballing EliteJuly 8 is apparently soccer's favorite maternity ward. Son Heung-min, the electric Korean forward, was born in 1992. Dutch defensive wall Virgil van Dijk arrived in 1991 — a man built to make strikers cry. And German goalkeeper Kevin Trapp joined the world in 1990. That's an attack, a defense, and a keeper all sharing a candle-blowing schedule. But it's not all cleats and corner kicks. Actress Maya Hawke (of Stranger Things fame) was born in 1998, the very same year as Jaden Smith, actor, rapper, and professional deep-thought tweeter. David Corenswet, the newly minted Superman, checked in back in 1993. Not a bad crowd for one calendar square. The Words That Started It AllAnd for a genuinely grand moment: on July 8, 1776, the United States Declaration of Independence received its first formal public reading in Philadelphia. A landmark document read aloud to a crowd — the 18th-century equivalent of dropping the biggest announcement of the year, except you had to physically stand in a square to hear it. No livestream, no replay, just history happening in real time. So there you have it — bears, balloons, ballers, and bold declarations. July 8 truly contains multitudes. |
