July 5: Spam, Bikinis, and a Very Good Elvis Day

July 5: Spam, Bikinis, and a Very Good Elvis Day

Some calendar days just clock in and do nothing. Not July 5. This date gave us a fashion revolution, a canned meat empire, the birth of rock 'n' roll, and a baseball player who apparently didn't read the rulebook. Buckle up.

The Bikini and Spam: A Perfectly Balanced Menu

In 1946, the modern bikini strutted onto a Paris fashion show, named after Bikini Atoll because designers apparently felt the swimsuit was, like a nuclear test, going to cause a stir. They were not wrong.

Meanwhile, back in 1937, Hormel Foods introduced Spam, the canned precooked meat that would go on to conquer pop culture, folklore, and urban legend. Between the bikini and Spam, July 5 essentially invented the concept of "summer cookout," for better and slightly greasier.

Elvis Enters the Building

On July 5, 1954, a young Elvis Presley recorded his first single, "That's All Right," at Sun Records in Memphis. History does not record whether he ate Spam that day, but we like to think he did, in a bikini, for maximum on-brand chaos. What we do know is that music was never quite the same afterward.

And in 1969, just two days after the death of founder Brian Jones, the Rolling Stones played a free festival in Hyde Park to more than a quarter of a million fans — proof that London has never met a park it wouldn't happily overcrowd for a good guitar riff.

Happy Birthday, Shohei Ohtani

Baseball fans, rejoice: Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese two-way phenomenon who pitches AND hits like the sport owes him money, was born on July 5, 1994. He's the guy who made "you can't do both" sound like a personal challenge. Sharing his birthday are fellow big-leaguers Jorge Polanco and Junior Caminero, plus Spanish footballer Alberto Moreno. A stacked lineup, honestly.

Independence, Times Three

July 5 is a genuine party day for national pride. It's Independence Day in Venezuela (from Spain, 1811), Independence Day in Cape Verde (from Portugal, 1975), and Independence Day in Algeria (from France, 1962). If you're keeping score, that's three countries celebrating their freedom on the same afternoon — a scheduling coincidence that must make for spectacular fireworks logistics.

Over in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it's the feast day of Cyril and Methodius, a genuine public holiday honoring the pair who basically gave a chunk of Europe its alphabet. Not bad for a day that also gave us canned meat and swimwear. Well played, July 5 — well played.
