July 29 is a date that doesn't do anything halfway. We're talking record-shattering weddings, the birth of an entire fantasy universe, and a holiday devoted to the world's most magnificent house cat. Buckle up, this one's got range. A Wedding, A Ring, and a Second RingIn 1981, an estimated 750 million people worldwide tuned in to watch Prince Charles marry Lady Diana Spencer at St Paul's Cathedral. That's three-quarters of a billion people, most of whom had no personal stake in the outcome but absolutely showed up anyway. It remains one of the greatest "I could be doing anything but I'll watch strangers get married" moments in history. Fittingly, July 29 also involves another famous ring. In 1954, Allen & Unwin published The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. So on the same date, humanity celebrated one very public ring and began obsessing over one very precious one. Coincidence? Probably. Delightful? Absolutely. Happy Birthday, Dak PrescottBorn on this day in 1993, Dak Prescott went on to become quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, which means every July 29 he receives birthday wishes from millions of fans and slightly fewer from opposing defenses. He shares the date with tennis player Nicole Melichar (also 1993) and South Korean actress and singer Shin Se-kyung (1990), proving July 29 has a real talent for producing people who are extremely good at things you and I are not. Also worth a nod: French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel, who in 1818 submitted a memoir on the diffraction of light, throwing serious weight behind the wave theory of light. He didn't get a cake, but he did get a lasting scientific legacy, which lasts longer than frosting. International Tiger DayJuly 29 is International Tiger Day, a global celebration of the planet's largest and most fashionable big cat. It's the one day where showing up in stripes counts as raising awareness rather than a questionable outfit choice. The message is simple: tigers are gorgeous, endangered, and deserve our respect, ideally from a comfortable distance. Elsewhere on the calendar, Thailand marks National Thai Language Day and Romania celebrates National Anthem Day, because some countries know how to properly honor the good stuff. All in all, July 29 is a date that gave us fairytales, hobbits, a Hall-of-Fame-caliber birthday roster, and a very good reason to appreciate tigers. Not a bad day's work. |
