August 7: Cross-Country Drives and Bering Strait Swims

Every date in history has its greatest hits, and August 7 is stacked with pioneers, pioneers, and one very brave swimmer who apparently forgot how cold water gets. Grab a snack and let's take a lap through the calendar.

Road Trips and Cold Swims

In 1909, Alice Huyler Ramsey arrived in San Francisco 59 days after leaving New York City, becoming the first woman to drive an automobile across the contiguous United States. Fifty-nine days! These days people complain about a four-hour drive with functioning air conditioning and a playlist. Alice did it with three passengers and, presumably, an incredible amount of patience.

Then in 1987, Lynne Cox became the first person to swim between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, crossing from Little Diomede to Big Diomede in the Bering Strait in 2 hours and 5 minutes. That's Cold War diplomacy done the hard way — in freezing water, without a boat, and probably without anybody's permission stamped in advance.

The Machine That Started It All

In 1944, IBM presented the first program-controlled calculator to Harvard University, after which it became known as the Mark I. It was the size of a room and could do math you'd now delegate to a wristwatch you ignore. Still, every laptop, phone, and questionable spreadsheet you've ever built owes this clunky ancestor a quiet thank-you.

Happy Birthday to the Athletic Elite

August 7 clearly told the universe it wanted to produce competitors. Born on this day in 1999 is Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the American hurdler and sprinter who treats world records like mildly inconvenient speed bumps. Sharing the date is Jalen Hurts, the American football player born in 1998, and Kyler Murray, the American football player born in 1997 — two quarterbacks who arrived exactly one year apart, as if the calendar was drafting a fantasy team.

Also celebrating: Spanish footballer Dani Ceballos (1996) and Dutch footballer Wout Weghorst (1992), plus English cyclists Adam Yates and Simon Yates, twin brothers both born in 1992. Yes, twins. Somewhere a race commentator is still sweating trying to tell them apart.
