August 5: Card Games, Space Probes, and a Road Trip

Some days sneak into history with a spectacle. August 5 preferred to arrive with a deck of cards, a rocket, and a woman who borrowed the family car without telling anyone. Buckle up.

The Day Nerdom Got a Rocket and a Rulebook

In 1993, Wizards of the Coast released Magic: The Gathering, the first trading card game ever, and thereby launched a billion late-night arguments about mana. Somewhere out there, a shoebox of cards is worth more than your car. If you traded yours away in fifth grade for a sandwich, we are so sorry.

Then in 2011, NASA launched the Juno probe to Jupiter as part of the New Frontiers program, sending a solar-powered spacecraft on a multi-year commute to the biggest planet in the neighborhood. It's the only intern that ever actually made it to the interview several hundred million miles away.

Bertha Benz, the Original Road-Trip Icon

Back in 1888, Bertha Benz made the first long-distance automobile trip, driving 106 km from Mannheim to Pforzheim, Germany, in a Benz Patent-Motorwagen. She did this without asking her husband, without a map app, and without a single rest-stop selling suspicious hot dogs. She basically invented the road trip and the phrase "I'll be fine, I've got this."

Meanwhile in 1816, Sir John Barrow of the Admiralty rejected a proposal to use Francis Ronalds's electrical telegraph, calling it "wholly unnecessary." A bold prediction about instant long-distance communication that has aged like milk in a Benz Patent-Motorwagen.

Happy Birthday to a Guitar and a Guard

August 5 has a stacked birthday list. Yungblud, the English musician and actor, was born in 1996, presumably already wearing eyeliner. That same year gave us Danish footballer Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. And in 2001, basketball dynamo Anthony Edwards arrived, later to make defenders question their life choices on national television. Also celebrating: Olivia Holt (1997) and Chinese superstar Wang Yibo (1997), because August 5 apparently books talent in bulk.

A Holiday Rolled Out in Style

The Catholic Church marks August 5 as the Dedication of the Basilica of St Mary Major, one of Rome's grand old churches and a genuinely lovely reason to look up at a ceiling and gasp. It's a fittingly majestic observance for a day that also gave us a card game empire and a rocket to Jupiter.

So today, drive somewhere unnecessary, shuffle a deck, and toast Bertha. History says you've earned it.
