Back in 1876, a performance of Das Rheingold opened the very first showing of Richard Wagner's Ring cycle at the inaugural Bayreuth Festival, attended by emperors and other composers. Fast-forward to 1999, when Japan formally adopted the Act on National Flag and Anthem, officially making the Hinomaru and "Kimigayo" the national flag and anthem. Somewhere, a very relieved government official finally got to update the paperwork.

August 13 apparently mints professional athletes like a factory. In 1990, DeMarcus Cousins arrived to eventually terrorize NBA paint. The Oldest Flex in the British Army

In 1650, General George Monck founded Monck's Regiment of Foot, the predecessor to the Coldstream Guards — the oldest regular regiment of the British Army in continuous active service. That is roughly 375 years of never once calling in sick. The Coldstream Guards have been standing at attention longer than most countries have existed, and they still look sharper than you do on a Monday.
