August 10 is a date that refuses to sit still. It gave us the world's most-visited museum, one of history's most embarrassing boat trips, and a lineup of birthdays sporty and glamorous enough to fill a very confusing dinner party. Let's dig in.

Art Museum, Meet Party Boat

In 1793, the Louvre in Paris opened its doors with 537 paintings and 184 objets d'art — the humble beginnings of what's now the planet's most-visited museum, home to a very small, very smug woman named Mona Lisa. It's proof that if you hang around long enough, you become priceless.

The sea, meanwhile, was less kind. In 1628, the Swedish warship Vasa set off on her maiden voyage toward the Thirty Years' War and promptly sank shortly after leaving Stockholm. Not into battle — just into the harbor. It remains the gold standard for peaking early. Somewhere, a Swedish shipbuilder is still explaining that it was "a design choice."

Happy Birthday to a Wildly Mixed Bag

The August 10 birthday club is delightfully random. Kylie Jenner (1997) arrived to eventually turn lip gloss into a media empire and remind us all that we chose the wrong career. Sharing her big day is Portuguese footballer Bernardo Silva (1994), who dazzles midfields for a living, and basketball's Ja Morant (1999), a man who treats gravity as a polite suggestion.

Truly the aspirational lifestyle. Lions get their own day because they are the undisputed kings of the savanna, and frankly the branding is impeccable.

If big cats aren't your thing, August 10 also marks the Declaration of Independence of Quito in Ecuador, when the city proclaimed independence from Spain back in 1809 — a bold move that finally paid off in 1822. And for the science crowd, in 1844 astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel figured out that Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, had an unseen companion. He deduced an invisible friend using pure math, which is arguably the nerdiest flex in the cosmos. So today: admire some art, respect a lion, and try not to sink your boat. Happy August 10.
