The office prank is a delicate art form. Too mild and it barely registers. Too extreme and you're in an HR meeting by lunch. The sweet spot — the genuinely inspired prank — makes the victim laugh despite themselves and earns the perpetrator a kind of folk legend status that survives multiple job changes. Here are a few that have earned that status. The Jello StaplerIf you've seen The Office, you know this one. Encasing a coworker's stapler — or really any small personal item — in a perfect block of gelatin requires patience, refrigerator access, and timing. The payoff is your coworker staring at their desk in silence for a full ten seconds before anything happens on their face. Worth every minute of prep. Wrapping EverythingThe gift wrap prank scales beautifully. You can wrap a single keyboard or you can wrap literally everything in someone's workspace — monitor, chair, potted plant, motivational poster, individual pens. The more thorough you are, the better the reaction. It's labor-intensive but completely reversible and impossible to be genuinely angry about, which makes it close to perfect. The Fake Parking TicketThis one requires someone who drives to work and parks in the lot. A convincing fake parking ticket — slightly wrong formatting, slightly unhinged violation listed — tucked under a windshield wiper produces a very specific kind of slow-burn stress that resolves into relief and then fury when the truth comes out. The window between "relief" and "fury" is extremely funny to witness in person. The Autocorrect TrapIf you have physical access to a coworker's unlocked computer for thirty seconds, autocorrect settings are your playground. Setting their name to autocorrect to "Your Majesty" or having "the" autocorrect to "the almighty" creates confusion that compounds quietly over an entire day. Low effort, high yield, surprisingly hard to notice immediately. The golden rule of office pranks: if you wouldn't laugh if it happened to you, find a different prank. This rule eliminates about 80% of bad ideas before they happen. |
