The internet is large. Most people navigate a very small part of it — their social media feeds, a few news sites, maybe Reddit's front page. But go a few clicks deeper into any platform and you'll find thriving communities dedicated to things you would never have predicted human beings could care this deeply about. Consider this your guided tour. The Subreddits That Should Not Exist But DoReddit's community structure means that any sufficiently specific interest can have its own dedicated forum, and people will be extremely passionate about it. There are communities dedicated to identifying fonts in the wild. To the structural engineering of things that have collapsed. To writing formal letters of complaint to fictional companies from fictional universes. These communities are completely serious about their niche and that is exactly what makes them beautiful. The Deep YouTube TierPast the front page of YouTube, past the trending tab and the algorithm's main recommendations, there are channels with 400 subscribers that have been quietly uploading extremely specific content for eleven years. A channel about identifying different species of crow by their call. A man who rates every bus stop he visits. A woman who reviews paint colors from hardware stores with the critical seriousness of a wine sommelier. These creators are doing it entirely for love of the thing. It's the most purely internet thing that exists. Niche TwitterEvery industry, hobby, and subculture has its own Twitter ecosystem with its own drama, celebrities, and in-jokes that are completely impenetrable to outsiders. Birdwatching Twitter, Fountain Pen Twitter, Medieval History Twitter, Infrastructure Twitter — each one is a complete social world running parallel to everything else. Infrastructure Twitter in particular is just people being extremely excited about roundabouts and pedestrian bridges, and nobody is more passionate about anything. The Craft ForumsPre-social-media forums built around specific crafts — woodworking, embroidery, scale modeling, sourdough — have been running for decades. Some have barely changed their design since 2003. The communities inside them are warm, encyclopedic, and deeply weird in the best possible way. They are the internet's best-kept secret and long may they thrive. |
