Before social media, celebrities had publicists. The publicist's job was to stand between the celebrity's unfiltered thoughts and the general public, acting as a diplomatic buffer against whatever the celebrity might say at 2 a.m. after a difficult evening. Twitter ended that arrangement permanently, and the results have been spectacular. A celebrity Twitter meltdown follows a familiar trajectory: something triggers them, they respond publicly, things escalate, the PR team wakes up and starts making calls. The posts stay up — or worse, get screenshotted before the delete — and the internet archives everything forever. The Classic "I'm Logging Off" PostThe celebrity announces they're leaving Twitter due to the toxicity and negativity of the platform. They post this announcement. The announcement receives thousands of replies, most of which are toxic and negative. The celebrity is usually back within a week, often without acknowledging the departure at all. The Beef That Went Too FarCelebrity feuds are as old as celebrity, but Twitter lets you watch them unfold in real time, post by post, reply by reply, each one slightly more regrettable than the last. What might have been a private disagreement twenty years ago is now a timestamped public record of two famous people saying increasingly uncharitable things about each other until someone's management steps in. The Extremely Confident Wrong TakeSomething happens in the world. A celebrity, watching from home, forms an opinion. They post that opinion with the confidence of someone who has done extensive research. They have not done extensive research. The corrections arrive quickly and in large numbers. The post remains up long enough to become a meme, at which point it becomes impossible to delete without making things worse. The Accidental Reply Instead of DMThis one is eternal. The celebrity meant to send a private message. They did not send a private message. Everyone can now read it. There is nothing to add here except that this has happened to multiple A-list celebrities multiple times, which is somehow the most humanizing thing about any of them. The archive is forever. Post accordingly. |
